    About Dr. Scott Frank

Dr. Frank has more than 30 years of experience providing anesthesia to patients in his office. He received his dental education from Northwestern University and his surgical and advanced anesthesia training from Howard University Hospital. While some dentists offer sedation, they do not have the extensive training that an oral surgeon does. Dr. Frank and his team attend continuing education programs to stay current with anesthetic advances and are even prepared to handle emergency operations. Whatever the case may be for visiting our office, you will be taken care of by a very experienced oral surgeon and his team.

    Anesthesia Options

    IV anesthesia

IV anesthesia refers to medication that is given intravenously (in the vein). This medication results in a partial or complete loss of consciousness, so you will not have awareness of the surgery, making your procedure comfortable. IV anesthesia is known for having an excellent safety record. Local anesthesia is given once the patient is sleepy or asleep.

    Nitrous oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is used in tandem with local anesthesia. Patients will be relaxed and less anxious, but there will be awareness of the procedure. Local anesthesia is still administered once the gas takes effect.

    Oral sedation

Less commonly, this is used for highly anxious patients to create a relaxed state before coming to the office for the procedure.

    Local anesthesia

Medication is given via injection in the mouth to numb the region for the procedure. This will eliminate pain sensations but patients will experience pressure and have awareness.

What to Expect During Your Surgery

Whether you’re getting your wisdom teeth removed or all of your teeth replaced, our comfortable facilities, highly trained doctor, and best-in-class patient experience ensure you’ll be in good hands with North Shore Smile Surgery.

Find out exactly what to expect during your oral surgery.

    Arrival

When you arrive at our office, one of our surgical assistants will confirm that you did not eat or drink for at least six hours, go over aftercare instructions, and connect you to our monitoring equipment, which will allow our staff to watch your EKG, blood pressure, and CO2 and oxygen levels throughout the procedure.

    Anesthesia

If you have opted to receive IV anesthesia, Dr. Frank will greet you, ask you if you have any final questions, and then proceed to place the IV into your arm or hand, which will deliver the anesthesia to you. During the procedure, one surgical assistant will be monitoring you and one assistant will be helping Dr. Frank.

    Post-Operation

You will wake up and be transferred to one of our comfortable recovery rooms with a parent or loved one in the room with you. Typically, it takes about 15 - 30 minutes for patients to wake up after they have stopped receiving IV anesthesia. Once you have woken up, we will go over post-operation instructions again and show you how to change gauze.

    Recovery

We will send you home with a care package, which includes an ice pack, ice cream, printed aftercare instructions, extra gauze, and the personal cell phones of our treatment coordinator and doctor should you need assistance. We will follow up with you a few days after your procedure to see how you are recovering.

    Pediatric Patients

While we are licensed and trained to provide anesthesia, we often work with a separate anesthesiologist to provide special care to our youngest patients. Children under 70 lbs may have an anesthesia specialist on-site to monitor their care before, during, and after the procedure. We want parents to know that we take every precaution to make sure their children are comfortable and safe during their oral surgeries. If you have any questions about this, don’t hesitate to ask us at your consultation.
