How Common is Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Most of our patients know someone who has already had their wisdom teeth removed. It seems like a very common procedure because it really is! You might be wondering, “If it’s so common, is it really necessary?”

Let’s take a look at just how many people actually need wisdom teeth extractions.

20 MILLION REMOVALS A YEAR

Each year, about 5 million Americans have their wisdom teeth removed. If you figure that each of those patients have all four teeth removed at the same time (which is the most common practice), you are looking at 20 million wisdom teeth being extracted!

IT AFFECTS ALMOST EVERYONE

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons estimates that about 90% of Americans have at least one wisdom tooth that is impacted (stuck). An impacted tooth is the number one reason to have your wisdom teeth removed.

THE BEST TIME TO REMOVE WISDOM TEETH

Generally, the best time to remove wisdom teeth is in the teens or early twenties. Removing teeth during this age group takes advantage of roots that are not completely formed. This reduces the risk of complications and leads to an easier recovery.

We also regularly remove wisdom teeth in older patients. Wisdom teeth removal can range from 10 years old to 80 years old! But as you get older, the bone becomes more dense, the risk of complications increase, cyst or tumors can develop, and recovery can be more difficult.

This is why a consultation is so valuable. We will evaluate you to find out what is best for you.

If your dentist or orthodontist has indicated that you need your wisdom teeth removed, you can rest assured that you're in good company!
