When is it Time to Stop Being Afraid of the Oral Surgeon?

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear."

Maybe you have heard this quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt before. It applies in all areas of life, but it's especially applicable for patients who are anxious or afraid of seeing a dentist, oral surgeon, or other dental professionals.

the causes of dental fear

In our experience, there are three major causes of dental fear. They are:
  1. Fear of pain and the unknown
  2. Fear of the guilt caused by the dentist or his or her staff
  3. Fear of the cost
The biggest fear for many patients is the fear of pain, and that’s what we want to address today.

fear of the dentist

Some of us fear the dentist because of things that happened at our childhood dentist. But like so many things, dentistry techniques have improved a lot since we were young.

Some dentists came across as unsympathetic or even mean. If you had a dentist who didn’t seem to care that you were in pain, it may have affected you, making it difficult to get to the dentist.

the risks of inaction

We can tell you all of the risks of inaction. An untreated wisdom tooth, for example, can develop an infection, extensive decay, cysts, tumors, and a lot of pain. Yet the decision is still up to the patient.

Will you allow fear to control your health choices, or will you decide that a healthy mouth is more important than fear?

If you’re of a certain age, you might still get nervous when you hear the high-pitched whine of a drill. It can also be difficult to overcome fear if you have had negative experiences in the past.

These are a few of the reasons we offer IV anesthesia to our patients. IV anesthesia techniques are nearly painless and safely make you unaware of the procedure.

You will be free from fear and pain and can simply have a much-needed procedure done while you rest comfortably.

There are so many things that can keep you from getting the necessary dental work completed. Don’t let fear stand in your way.

Let us help you overcome fear together by contacting our office now!
