Don’t Make These 4 Dental Implant Mistakes!

If you’ve recently had a dental implant procedure done, you probably are enjoying your new teeth and freedom immensely. Dental implants can last an entire lifetime if cared for properly, but problems can arise if you fail to maintain them.

In this post, we’ll discuss some common mistakes that many individuals make after they have a dental procedure done. If you’re interested in learning more about the dental implant procedures that North Shore Smile Surgery has to offer, contact our Buffalo Grove office today!

1) Not Brushing and Flossing Regularly

Just like your natural teeth, the gums around your teeth need to be cleaned and care for twice a day. However, many people believe that, because their implants are not “real” teeth, they don’t have to brush or floss them daily. It’s essential to the longevity of your dental implants and oral health to use a fluoride toothpaste to keep your dental implants safe from any issues, and also floss twice a day as well.

2) NOT USING MOUTH RINSE

Gum disease is a serious threat to dental implants, so failing to use a mouth rinse after brushing and flossing could cause problems down the road. Use a non-alcoholic mouth rinse or mouthwash after brushing to make sure that any residue, food particles, or other debris has been rinsed away.

3) Smoking

Dental implants or not, smoking is extremely detrimental to both your oral and dental health. It’s best to give up smoking as soon as possible and especially after a dental implant procedure.

4) Chewing Ice

One of the surest ways to damage and break dental implants, chewing ice is a serious no-no after having surgery.

Bleeding, swelling, tenderness, intense pain or sensitivity could all be linked back to a serious problem with your dental implants, so if you are encountering any of these issues, contact your oral surgeon immediately to schedule an appointment.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the recovery after your surgery. Something that you may believe is minimal could turn out to be a serious problem.
